Lately we’ve all been talking about the rather terrifying video of a young Australian attempting to bungee jump off a bridge over the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe, only to plunge headlong into the crocodile-infested river below when the cord snapped. You can watch her ordeal here:
Adventure tourism has gained enormous popularity in the last number of years, with increasing numbers of would-be explorers of all ages and from all walks of life seeking the road less travelled.
Part of the trend is also seeking out extreme sports and activities to add extra excitement to the journey. But is the thrill always worth the risk? The woman in the video above rather miraculously escaped with cuts and bruises, but the end result could’ve been much worse.
The other question is whether the idea of adventure travel and active holidays will ever totally replace the traditional beach holiday, which is all about kicking back in the sun and forgetting the cares of the world. For some people, this is the only way truly to relax on holiday – any activity beyond a gentle paddle would defeat the purpose. For others, lounging by the pool equals major boredom. So we’ve started to wonder, what type of holiday do most people really prefer?
