We found out today that the worlds narrowest street might be vanishing!
In the town of Reutlingen in Germany you can find the street Spreuerhofstrasse and since 2007 it has held the Guinness world record for being the worlds narrowest street.
Measuring 31 cm at its narrowest point up to 50cm at its widest it is definitely a tight squeeze to get through. However, the street is contracting as water seeps through the walls on either side, making them bulge. If the walls continue to expand it may become impossible to get down the street and it would have to relinquish the record.
This got us thinking about other unusual tourist attractions and after a bit of hunting this is what we found.
Great Blue Hole
If you are heading to Belize then you should take the time to visit the Great Blue Hole.
This natural wonder is located in the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System. It is thought to be the world’s largest sea-hole and is around 125 metres deep and 300 meters wide. It is a great place for divers with a wide variety of rare animal species and cave networks to explore. It is also quite impressive view from above.
Next up in the world of weird we have Dead Vlei which means dead marsh. This area in the Namib-Naukluft National Park once supported tree and plant life but it is thought that the change in climate caused all the water to dry up and all of the plant life to die.
Not only are these trees dead but they are so dry that they can’t even decompose. The trees are thought to be over 1000 years old and are frozen in time.
We are next heading to New Zealand to look at some rocks. Not any rocks though, the Moeraki Boulders to be precise. Formed from sea floor sediments around 60 million years ago they vary in size with some of the larger ones weighing several tonnes and up to 3 metres in diameter.
Setenil de las Bodegas
Perhaps New Zealand is a little bit too far away so how about seeing some weird stuff in Spain? Here we see the natural world mixing the modern world. In Setenil de las Bodegas, a small village in Andalucia houses have actually been built into the side of a rocky mountain. Quite impressive.
Our final piece of weirdness for this post comes from the delightfully wacky world of the Japanese. Japan has many spas and are famous for their Onsen baths but some one came up with the amazing idea of mixing in some classic noodle ramen into the mix. It is thought that the ingredient pepper collagen does wonders for the skin including clearing up acne.
There you have it, and if you happen to be in the some of these different areas we hope that you will check out these weird and wonderful places.
